Life has its ups and downs, and sometimes we find ourselves struggling with our mental health or other forms of adversity which can really impact our levels of motivation and energy. It’s during these challenging times that we must make a conscious effort to take action, regardless of how we feel. Whether it’s going to the gym, studying, working, attending social events, or spending time with family, putting off these activities can allow our inner demons to take control.

In this article, we’ll explore why it’s crucial for young men to resist the temptation of procrastination when faced with adversity and how taking action despite not feeling 100%  can lead to personal growth and overcoming the obstacles life throws at us.

Ride the Wave:

When anxiety, depression, or any other negative feelings arise, it’s common to want to retreat from the world and avoid social situations or commitments. However, choosing to ride out these difficult moments can be empowering. Visualise these moments as riding a wave: at first, it may feel overwhelming, but remind yourself that it will pass. By staying present and breathing through the discomfort, you deny your inner demons the satisfaction of winning. Skipping exercise, a social event, or any other commitment only reinforces their control over you. Instead, challenge yourself to take action despite your state of mind and face those feelings head-on.

Conquering Your Mental Fortresses:

The battles we face within our own minds often prove to be the most significant hurdles in life. By conquering these internal challenges, you’ll become better equipped to face external obstacles. Overcoming mental health challenges is a demanding and often unacknowledged journey. It requires immense strength and determination but remember that recognition from others is not the ultimate goal. The most important thing is to do it for yourself and embrace the growth that comes from pushing past your limits.

The Power of Action:

Procrastination is a slippery slope that can lead to a deepening rut of negativity and inaction. The more you delay taking action, the more you become trapped in a cycle of stagnation. However, every step forward, no matter how small, brings you closer to breaking free from the storm.

Renowned former Navy SEAL Jocko Willink once said, “Go through the motions.” And expressed how he disagrees with the negative connotations of this phrase. In Jocko’s eyes, this statement perfectly encapsulates the importance of taking action, even when you’re not feeling your best. By refusing to throw in the towel and take the easy road, we build resilience, discipline, and mental fortitude. Going through the motions may seem mundane at times, but it is in those very moments that we develop the tools needed to face life’s challenges head-on. Remember: it’s better to under-perform than not show up at all.

The battles you fight within your own mind are just as significant as the external obstacles you encounter. So, embrace the journey, celebrate your progress, and know that every time you show up and ‘go through the motions’, you are moving in the right direction towards a better life.
